1) All the classic rules of Diplomacy (version 1971) apply except for the modifications below.
2) At the beginning of the game an eight player, the Pope, secretly chooses a country. If this country wins the Pope wins in his place.
3) On each turn the Pope can “excommunicate” a unit which can then only hold in place for that turn.
Additional rule.
4) The Pope can “inspire” a unit which then is forced to obey the order given to it by the Pope in place of its original order.
